If you are looking for a glamorous day out, look no further than the prestigious Stobo Castle Ladies Day at Musselburgh Racecourse. On the 1st of June Scotland’s largest five star racing day event, Ladies Day, will begin in truly glittering fashion. A sell-out event famed for its inimitable atmosphere, its a day for the ladies & gentleman to dawn their finest outfits and really dress to impress!
In the past St Andrews was always a place I visited to play golf and why not, it is the home of golf after all with its incredible links courses presenting so many challenges. What I also love about the place is the narrow, cobbled little streets leading to quaint little pubs for drowning your sorrows after several wayward tee-shots during the day! Most recently however I visited St Andrews for a different reason. It was to check out the newly refurbished The Saint Bar & Kitchen, the ideal place to see what culinary delights this picturesque Scottish seaside town has to offer.
There is nothing better than staying in a hotel which is packed full to the brim with style and character. Since 1881 the building which has now become The Principal Hotel on George St, Edinburgh, has been welcoming guests into its delightful surroundings. It is made up of five listed Georgian townhouses in what is a truly stunning location in the capital’s city centre. Fast forward from those wealthy citizens who entered many years ago and I recently found myself lucky enough to be a guest at the hotel, spending an overnight where I experienced its charm and elegant ambiance to the full.
As a self confessed petrol head, there is nothing more exciting than getting up close and personal with a car that really sets your pulse racing. Whats better still is testing that car on the wide open roads of picturesque Scotland, experiencing every twist and turn of the worlds best selling two seater sports car’s natural surroundings. A few weekends past I was lucky enough to do exactly this when I took the brand new Mazda MX-5 on a tour up through the Scottish highlands, and on the way, stopping off at the visually stunning Glen Etive, backdrop for the James Bond movie Skyfall.
As whisky tasting experiences go, there aren’t many where you find yourself climbing a 20ft wall of sheer ice, followed by quaffing a delicious dram from a glass fashioned out of ice, within a room entirely constructed from ice. A lot of ice in there I know however this was exactly what I done last month with Tomatin whisky, exploring the final two elements of their incredible Five Virtues collection, Metal and Water.
I think one of my favourite things, aside from clothing and a little bit of sunshine, is some really good food and drink. There are some great options out there at the minute with new spots opening almost daily. Here at The Gentleman Select, its always fun suggesting restaurants and bars to try and recently I was lucky enough to visit one such place I would thoroughly recommend, The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen in Edinburgh.
Last month was a hugely exciting time for The Gentleman Select. I embarked on a little adventure to Scotland’s capital Edinburgh and in the process, also added a new and exciting section to the website for the first time. Travel. I must admit when I first got news of the opportunity to stay within the globally renowned Radisson hotel chain, specifically the Radisson Blu in the centre of Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, I leaped at it.
Whisky is a creation loved the world over. Drank by famous figures of the past such as Sir Winston Churchill to Katharine Hepburn, toasted to celebrate a marriage or quaffed at the weekend to down ones sorrows, it truly is a legendary drink. Whats fascinating still is the length of time it has been around, 1790 in the case of Balblair, the oldest working whisky distillery in the Scottish Highlands. With this in mind then it was only right that I delve a little deeper, not that I took a great deal of convincing, into one of their most special creations of late, the 3rd release of their 1991 vintage Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
For me candles are something which gentleman out there still need to explore much more. Online and in high street shops, there is a good range to choose from, all hailing from various countries in mainland Europe. It is extra special however to have a brand much closer to home, one which offers an incredible varied range of scents guaranteed to warm your home and reinvigorate your senses. I’am of course talking about Timeless Candles.
We all know the backpack is a very popular accessory just now with statement pieces from high end brands such as Fendi, Valentino and Givenchy visible everywhere we go. Recently however I decided to check out a brand, fresh to the shores of the U.K and drawing inspiration from those vintage alpinist’s and explorers. I’am of course talking about Doughnut Bags.
