Introducing The New Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

It’s been a long time coming, and rumoured for the last couple of years, but it’s finally here. Although not the only new release to get excited about this year, many are pleased with the announcement of a new Rolex Daytona in 904L Stainless Steel complete with a black Cerachrom bezel.

The watch itself doesn’t seem to have changed dramatically and has stayed at a fairly conservative 40mm in diameter and will, as always, be available in either a black or white dial. The overall character of the new Daytona, however, is a mixture of modernity and nostalgia, and for me, gives a nod to the iconic Paul Newman Daytona of the past.

As always, the new Daytona 116500LN will be powered by a Rolex in-house calibre 4130 which is now accurate to +2/-2 seconds per day – more than twice as accurate as a conventional COSC certified movement. It’s worth noting that this certification of accuracy is present on all current Rolex calibres and not just the Daytona – pretty impressive when you consider the amount of watches being produced annually by the Swiss manufacture.

If you are looking to get hold of one of these, it goes without saying that you better be quick! The Rolex Daytona is notoriously hard to get hold of and I think it’s safe to say this will be no exception. UK RRP: £8250.

ROLEX ANNOUNCE 5 YEAR WARRANTY

As Rolex fans and general horology enthusiasts, it’s hard not to become excited by any news from one of the watchmaking giants. 1st July 2015 marks the launch of the new Rolex five year warranty, covering everything the old guarantee covered, but for more than twice as long.

Now let’s be honest – a five year warranty is hardly an innovation. Brands of similar ilk (although many will argue there are none) like Breitling and Omega have been offering five and four year warranties respectively over the last few years. However, any savvy consumer will soon realise that to qualify for said warranty, you have to shell out an extra few pounds and buy their premium product.

In the case of Breitling, for example, £6760 will buy their Chronomat 44 equippped with their in house 01 calibre. Admittedly you get a lot of watch for your money: not only is the Chronomat easy on the eyes but it’s waterproof to 500m, has a unidirectional bezel, screw-down pushers, and of course a chronograph. On top of all this you’ll be given a Breitling five year warranty which now manifests itself in the form of a fancy little futuristic gadget. So far so good. Now to the small print: in order to take full advantage of this fancy new warranty, you must take your watch to an authorised dealer every two years for them to test the watches water resistency. What happens if you forget?. Time flies , you could have three new watches to switch between by then!. Not only that, but if you decided to go for a classic like the Navitimer 01, a pilots watch with virtually no measurable water resistancy, you still have to do the same or risk forfeiting your extended warranty and putting yourself out of pocket should any “water resistence problems” arise.

Comparitavly, albeit more expensive, £7950 will buy you an iconic Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in stainless steel. For your money you get a minimum of 100m water resistence, a chronograph, a tachymeter bezel, screw-down pushers, and..well..a Daytona. Add that to a tried and tested in-house calibre 4130, and you have all the makings of an icon. And to top it off, a five year international warranty. No conditions. And the best part is that this warranty covers the entire Rolex range – not just the top end. So, it doesn’t matter if you buy a £5000 Submariner or a £50,100 Platinum Daytona – everyone receives the same standard and gets the paperwork to prove it!.

There’s also some good news for those who bought a Rolex between 1st July 2013 and 30th June 2015, a one year grace period has been added to your watch, effectively giving you a three year warranty. For many this will make no difference. However given that along with this announcement, Rolex have confirmed that they now officially recommend service intervals of 10 years on each and every watch that they produce (on our last count 800,000+ annually), this demonstrates an incredible confidence and credibility in all the products they manufacture, a universal standard across the board.

THE FORD GT40: 50 YEARS AT LE MANS

With the completion of the 2015 Le Mans 24hr race this past weekend, we had many historic motor racing moments to digest. Firstly, this years winner, Nico Hulkenberg became the first active F1 driver to win Le Mans in 24 years with his Porsche team and partner Nick Tandy.

The second however, and arguably most exciting, was the announcement that in 2016 Ford will be returning to the most prestigious of endurance races with the all new Ford GT supercar to compete in the LM GTE class. This is even more significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24hrs of Le Mans in which Ford went on to repeat this feat in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

The Ford GT LM edition will be structured around the new road going version, set to go on sale next year. A car which will boast the new 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, the most powerful EcoBoost engine produced, is aimed as the top product of Ford’s Perfomance group division. The car carries many other innovative features which Ford believe will not only make it competitive on the Le Mans scene, but beneficial to each car in the Performance division sector, state of the art aerodynamics with advanced lightweight composites featuring carbon fibre which delivers an extremely tough but light chasis, driven of course by the powerful and efficient EcoBoost engine are such features. This Performance section then is a rapidly growing area for Ford with creations such as the Focus RS, Shelby GT350R and F-150 Raptor on the table with an aim to have 12 new performance vehicles by 2020.

So far the new 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 has been trailed already at several endurance based events, the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in 2014, then achieving overall victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring and Rolex 24 at Daytona. The two teams, which will be run by Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, will compete in the full 2016 schedule of the FIA World Endurance Championship and the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship taking it into its competition debut in January 2016 at the Rolex 24 in Daytona, Florida.

Although drivers have yet to be announced, Ganassi Racing achieved major victories in the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis 500 so there is no doubt the foundations are the best there is. Team owner Chip Ganassi said “We’ve won races and championships, but we’ve never run Le Mans, When presented the opportunity to compete with the all-new Ford GT on the world’s biggest sports car stage, and on the 50th anniversary of one of the most storied victories in racing history, how could any race team not want to be part of that? Will it be a challenge? Absolutely, but we couldn’t be with a better partner than Ford.”
