As many of you will know, I do have a particular weakness for tailoring so much so it is something which has featured many times on The Gentleman Select over the past few years and will likely continue to do so. With this in mind, you can imagine my delight then when the guys over at Slaters Menswear got in touch with myself and my friends of John at The Everyday Man and Robbie at The Middle Aged Man, to see how we could put together a trio of ultra sharp looks to really help you prepare for the forth coming Christmas and New Year party season.
Now from my perspective, when selecting an outfit for the festive party time of year, I always like to go with one which has a simple yet luxurious edge. Bear in mind that in our day to day lives we wear suits of many styles and varieties so when we get these rare opportunities to dawn a well cut, velvet jacket, I feel we should grab them and create a real menswear style statement from the moment you walk in that door.
To build my outfit I started off by picking out the Fellini velvet jacket in a rich burgundy colour priced at £65.00. This well tailored piece sits wonderfully on the shoulders, is tapered nicely at the sides and offers great movement whilst oozing style and class with its bold, peaked lapels and single pocket feature. It is beautifully finished off with a sleek burgundy lining making it extremely comfortable to wear for the duration of your party. When wearing a jacket such as this I really like to maximise the presence of that rich colour and fabric. With this in mind, I would go with a simple, sharp white shirt such as the one I picked by Guide London from Slaters. It features the smallest hint of burgundy on the buttons and under collar details which pairs up with the jacket perfectly.
For the bottom half of my look, a simple pair of nicely tailored, plain black trousers was next on the agenda. If you head in to Slaters they have a wealth of cuts and styles to choose from so you are certain to find what you are looking for. When you visit the store my advice would be to make use of their highly experienced, knowledgable staff and get the trousers altered so they fit perfectly. I chose to have “No Break” with the trousers sitting just above the top of my shoes which gives a much cleaner, straighter appearance.
That nicely leads us on to the next part, a good pair of shoes. These are essential to completing the bottom half of this look and I found a wonderful pair in Jimmy Bee black lace ups priced at £69.00. It is my personal opinion but I would only pick a black patent shoe if you are wearing an all black tuxedo or a dark navy, it will look far too flashy otherwise especially with a bold statement piece like the velvet jacket. My suggestion is to take your time and find a pair which has a little bit of shine to them, but carries an all round classic, narrow finish. The Jimmy Bee pair I wore were in fact perfect with just the tiniest hint of detail on the sides, complimenting the trousers and shirt with a subtle brilliance.
Of course to cap off the whole party look you must accessorise properly and the best way to do this is with a good old gentlemanly bow tie and pocket square. again this needn’t be loud in colour or pattern. Slaters Menswear have a fantastic range to choose from, self-tie to pre-tied with some lovely looking knitted versions in there to. I selected a delightful matching combination in black which had a very light paisley pattern within, again nice and subtle so it isn’t to loud and works in with the velvet jacket flawlessly.
On the day of our project it was wonderful to catch up with the guys from Slaters at our location in Handsome Jack’s Barbers, a place in fact I can highly recommend for a tidy up before you get dressed for your soirée. Personally I was also hugely impressed at the wealth of knowledge and passion for menswear which Slaters have whilst we chatted away.
Now that you are beginning to plan ahead for the party season, I throughly suggest you take a trip in to Slaters and find that exquisite outfit that I’m sure will elevate your look to the next level.
